Lance Armstrong & Oprah Winfrey: cyclist sorry for doping

lance armstrongOne year ago today and the Lance Armstrong scandal broke.  What sort of world did he live in?  There are remarkable parallels to the Jimmy Saville case, a deception perpetrated over a long period of time by a bullying personality who steam-rollered over any opposition that got in his way.

Lance Armstrong made it.
He ruled the world.
But he had betrayed it.
He’d fooled the world.
Twenty-two times he had won
the prized yellow vest.
He was the one.
he was the best.
Seven years he reigned supreme,
victor of the Tour de France.
He lived the dream
but led the world a merry dance.
Seven years undefeated.
He cheated.

Lance Armstrong used drugs
in the rule of his world.
He denied it, he’d shrug
and play it cool in his world.
His team were afraid.
He bullied his friends
with malicious tirade
just to meet his own ends.
But truth will out they cry,
and his titles were stripped.
He was hung out, on Oprah, to dry –
metaphorically whipped.
For seven years he cheated.
Now defeated.

18th January 2013 – headline from the BBC

Notes: “Lance Armstrong & Oprah Winfrey: cyclist sorry for doping”.  Lance Armstrong ended years of denials by admitting he used performance-enhancing drugs during all seven of his Tour de France wins.  However the American denied it was “sport’s biggest doping programme”, saying “it was smart, but it was conservative, risk averse”.  He did not feel he was cheating at the time saying that the definition of a cheat is to gain an advantage on a rival or foe. “I didn’t view it that way. I viewed it as a level playing field”.
