Half of all food ‘thrown away’ claims report

waste food

One year ago today and this report appeared condemning the waste of food in this country, Europe and by implication western countries in general.  I wonder if anything has changed …..

Third world.
Hunger stalks the land,
walking hand-in-death-grip-hand
with famine, drought, calamity, disease;
whilst in the first, so-called ‘developed’ world,
the mainly western world
we pretty much do as we please.

We’re profligate with our resources, water, food
and I’ll include this chastening thought,
that every year we waste two billion tons,
fifty percent of food that we produce;
it makes me ashamed,
it makes no sense.

Deduce what you may,
I say one day we’ll pay
the price of that materialist creed;
the gluttony, the wanton waste, the greed,
the blind eye turned to the whole world’s need.
I’m all right Jack.  Fuck the rest,
I’ll do what’s best for me.

We must understand
the answer lies within our hand.
Two billion tons would feed the world,
when hunger stalks the land.

10th January 2013 – headline from the BBC

Notes: “Half of all food ‘thrown away’ claims report.”  As much as half of the world’s food, amounting to two billion tonnes worth, ends up being thrown away, a UK-based report has claimed.  The Institution of Mechanical Engineers said the waste was being caused by poor storage, strict sell-by dates, bulk offers and consumer fussiness.  The study also found that up to 30% of vegetables in the UK were not harvested because of their physical appearance.  The institution’s Dr Tim Fox said the level of waste was “staggering”.  The report said that between 30% and 50% of the four billion tonnes of food produced around the world each year went to waste.  It suggested that half the food bought in Europe and the US was thrown away.
