It’s Odd Day! Mathematical quirk featuring three consecutive odd numbers happens only five times every 100 years

The day is a mathematical oddity, one when we should pause to remember …… Dylan Thomas died 60 years ago, aged only 39;  the atrocities of war on Remembrance Sunday, tomorrow; and typhoon Haiyan, reputedly the largest storm ever recorded, estimated to have caused at least 10,000 deaths in the Philippines.

Remember Today

Remember today,
the ninth of November twenty-thirteen.
Mathematically strange,
the last date this century
with three odd numbers
consecutively arranged in a row.
Nine, eleven, thirteen,
a numerologist’s dream
not to be seen again for ninety-two years.

Remember today.
Sixty years since the Welsh bard passed away.
Dylan Thomas lilted gentle into his night
under milk wood.

We should remember today
Remembrance Sunday
and butcher Haig of the Somme.
And remember Siegfried Sassoon
condemning the Menin gate,
his ‘sepulchre of crime.’

Remember today
2nd Lieutenant Arthur Conway Young
on whose headstone is written
“Sacrifice to the fallacy that war can end.”

Remember today
as corpses hung in trees
in the debris of the Philippines
struck by typhoon Haiyan.
No poppies garland their graves
on the ninth of November twenty-thirteen.

Notes:  “It’s Odd Day! Mathematical quirk featuring three consecutive odd numbers happens only five times every 100 years.”  This is the last time for 92 years that we will have a day featuring three consecutive odd numbers – the final ‘Odd Day’ of the 21st century.  Numerologists claim the Odd Day carries significant meaning and could indicate a weekend of change for many.  It is a good day for taking stock and re-evaluation, the significance of three consecutive odd numbers is that it could make us more receptive to new ideas.
